Another painting exercise. I am getting more comfortable with gouache, but it is such a fragile medium I still have difficulty not feeling like I am constantly at risk of spoiling the painting. However, I am making progress with treating the paint like an opaque medium rather than like watercolour. I have a vision of where I want to be before I do another illustration job with gouache, and perhaps soon I will be there |

It has been a little frustrating the past year not being able to post much of what I have been doing with my time.
I currently have a whole load of art and writing that I worked really hard on being represented at MIPCOM, and my main source of freelance over the past while has forced me to do some very challenging artwork, some of which I am quite pleased with. But alas, all that stuff has to remain secret for the next little while.
In the mean time, I have taken advantage of a sick day to make yet another bird in gouache.
I feel like every time I pick this medium up I have to re-learn it. It is still not intuitive for me, but I like that I making progress. The next thing I want to work on is to begin using a more complex colour pallet. I should have time for that very soon. |

Man, I am really enjoying having a back yard this year. It makes me so happy to look back there and see all the life and sunshine.

I spent most of today working on freelance stuff. However, while at the gym I saw a guy wearing a shirt with a whale on it, and I felt compelled all day to draw one myself. I limited my pallet to brown and white, and went at it when I really should have been going to bed.
Sorta uninspired, but I am over drawing whales until next time.

No drawings lately I can share. My quest to draw extra has be quelled by too-much-work. Also, though, by the fact that I have been compelled to write lately. There is news associated with that, which I will share when the timing is appropriate. Perhaps Thursday.
Mary and I managed to slip out of town for a few days and head to Georgian Bay. The weather was beautiful. I love this time of year, cold and wet, and bursting with life. We spent one windy night under the covers, listening to the furious sound of the water and trees, and partook in Mary's favourite pass times in such circumstances: "pretending to be Hobbits." The days were spent trying to get the work we brought with us done, but we were constantly distracted by Outside.

I think I might have saved the painting. Happy with how it is coming along, but now clients are asking for things and I must set it aside for a while. Also, a little bit of doodling was done yesterday in Trinity Bellwoods Park. I meant to do something more substantial, but dogs were distracting. |

A small painting:
Plus, a big painting I have been working away at: I feel like this painting is on the verge of being ruined.
The thing about water based mediums is that there is only so much work you can do on a painting before it reaches a point of being "overworked." One must be concise with the medium, and I have not been thus far. It is difficult to tell with this photo, but I have just about run out of options with the transparent phase of painting. The paints are getting muddy and the image is becoming stiff, and I have not yet achieved what I wanted to before moving on to the opaque layers.
I have taken a few days off from working on it, and I am ready to tackle it again, but I won't be surprised if I end up scrapping it.
This one is complex enough that I should have done some colour studies before starting. |
